AAC support

Augmentative and Alternative Communication: all the ways a person can communicate beyond, or alongside, spoken words.

What it looks like

Communication devices and speech-generating apps, PODD books, communication boards and other visual communication aids, key word signs and gestures. Most people use a mix, and there's no “too young”, “too old” or “not ready”. Nobody has to earn the right to communicate.

Device trials: finding what fits

Choosing a communication device shouldn't be a guess. We run device trials so you can test options in real life before committing, comparing hardware, apps and mounting, and gathering the evidence funding bodies like the NDIS ask for.

We also help with choosing vocabulary, the words and layout inside the device, so it grows with the person instead of running out of things to say.

Access for every body

A device is only useful if you can reach it. We support all the ways of accessing AAC, including touch, switch access, eye gaze and partner-assisted strategies, and work with occupational therapists and suppliers to get positioning and set-up right.

Learning how to use a communication device

The device is the easy part. Using it every day is where support matters. We coach the whole family or team to model on the device, respond to every attempt, and build it into routines, so it becomes a real voice rather than something left in a drawer.

Still unsure? We’ll help you work it out.
